Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has assured former President John Dramani Mahama that Ghana will bounce back in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Chad on Friday, March 21.
Mahama made an unexpected appearance at the team’s training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, offering words of encouragement ahead of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. His visit follows the Black Stars’ disappointing 2024 campaign, where they failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades.
Despite the setback, Ayew expressed confidence in the team’s ability to recover. “It’s a big sign that you’re here supporting us. We know we’re in a tough situation, but we’re not afraid. We will turn things around on Friday, so you can relax. We’ll do the job for the nation,” Ayew reassured Mahama.
The former president encouraged the players to put the AFCON disappointment behind them and focus on the task ahead. “Before you start the qualifiers, let’s forget the AFCON setback and look forward. I know that in the World Cup qualifiers, you’re going to redeem yourselves. If we play well, we will qualify,” Mahama stated.
He also stressed the importance of regaining public trust through strong performances. “Ghanaians will find it in their hearts to support the team again. And I know you can do it. You’re all talented players. We’re going to continue supporting you, not only for the World Cup but beyond. The goal is to build a very strong team.”
Mahama further assured the team of his unwavering support and even committed to attending the match in person. “I will take time off to watch the game, although my heart is not very good at handling the tension. They say I should eat before watching, but I trust you will justify my presence. The whole nation is behind you, and I believe you can make it.”
The Black Stars will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21 before traveling to Morocco to face Madagascar on March 24, determined to revive their World Cup qualification hopes.
