The Energy Minister, Hon. John Jinapor, has refuted claims that the government intends to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Addressing the media during a visit to the West African Gas Pipeline Company Station in Tema on February 21, he dismissed reports suggesting an outright sale of the state-owned power distributor.
The news reports, publications, and commentary from certain individuals claiming that we are selling ECG are completely false.
He clarified that while the government is exploring private sector participation, it is not considering selling Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to him, the objective is to enhance operational efficiency, reduce financial losses, and strengthen the company’s revenue base to enable the timely payment of essential bills.
“It will not be sold, but we seek private sector involvement to boost efficiency, minimize losses, and enhance revenue collection so we can meet our financial commitments,” the minister reiterated.
Hon. John Jinapor emphasized that the government’s priority is to improve ECG’s performance while maintaining state ownership.
He assured Ghanaians that any collaboration with the private sector would be aimed at optimizing service delivery and ensuring the sustainability of the country’s power sector.
