Only Two Genders Exist – President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his stance on traditional gender roles and family values, emphasizing that there are only two genders male and female and that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Speaking at a special fellowship with the clergy, President Mahama revealed that he had engaged with the Speaker of Parliament to ensure that the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, which had previously expired, is reintroduced as a government-sponsored bill rather than a private member’s motion.

“I have spoken with the Speaker so that a renewal of the expired Proper Families Values Bill should be introduced by the government. It is my hope that consultations will see a renewed bill,” he stated.

His comments come amid ongoing national debates on LGBTQ+ rights and the role of traditional family values in Ghana. The proposed bill seeks to criminalize activities related to LGBTQ+ advocacy and promotion.

In 2024, Amnesty International raised concerns about the bill, warning that it could significantly undermine the fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals. Activists fear that its passage may lead to increased persecution of LGBTQ+ people and those who support their rights, forcing many into hiding.

Despite these concerns, President Mahama emphasized that his leadership would reflect the values and aspirations of Ghanaians, particularly on social and moral issues. He reaffirmed his commitment to Christian principles, stating that they will continue to guide his governance approach.

During his address, the President also expressed appreciation for the prayers and support of religious leaders.

He pledged to collaborate with churches and faith-based organizations to promote national unity, development, and moral integrity.
