Ghana and Burkina Faso Strengthen Ties in Security and Trade

On Monday, March 10, 2025, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama met with Burkina Faso’s interim leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

Their discussions focused on enhancing regional cooperation, addressing security threats, and improving economic ties.

Following the meeting, President Mahama told reporters that they had discussed the African Economic Community (AEC) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He expressed a better understanding of Burkina Faso’s concerns regarding ECOWAS and committed to sharing these issues with other West African leaders at the upcoming ECOWAS summit.

“There is a lack of trust among leaders, and while it will take time to mend, we must work towards rebuilding confidence,” he stated.

Security was a primary focus, particularly the increasing terrorist threat in the Sahel region.

President Mahama noted that terrorism, which began in Mali, has now spread to Niger and Burkina Faso. He emphasized the necessity for West African countries to collaborate to prevent its further spread.

The leaders also explored opportunities to strengthen trade and economic cooperation, including:

1. Easing access for Burkinabe businesses to use Ghana’s ports.

2. Facilitating agricultural trade between the two countries.

3. Establishing a direct flight between Accra and Ouagadougou.

4. Expanding Ghana’s electricity exports to Burkina Faso.

5. Improving petroleum transportation through Ghana.

President Mahama revealed that Burkina Faso had acquired a fuel storage terminal in Tema and was considering utilizing Ghana’s pipeline network to transport fuel and diesel to Ouagadougou.

This meeting marked an important step in strengthening the partnership between Ghana and Burkina Faso in the areas of trade, security, and regional cooperation.
