Ghanaian hiplife star Mzbel has revealed that her entry into the music industry was unplanned, which ultimately impacted her ability to brand herself effectively. Speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM, the singer admitted that her lack of proper branding cost her numerous opportunities throughout her career.
According to Mzbel, this shortfall could be one of the reasons she has not won any major awards despite her two decades in the music industry.
“I’m not blaming anyone. I think the issue was my branding,” she confessed. “If I were starting today, I would definitely put more effort into it. Back then, I would go on the radio and say anything, wear anything, and attend events I shouldn’t have. My brand wasn’t properly put together.”
Mzbel praised fellow Ghanaian artist Becca, who she believes was well-branded by her former manager, Kiki Banson. She encouraged upcoming female artists to learn from her experience and prioritize branding to enhance their success.
Rising to fame in 2004 with her debut album ‘Awoso Me’, Mzbel became one of the biggest female artists in Ghana and gained popularity in countries like Nigeria, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Kenya. However, she expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition in her home country.
“While I did receive recognition in other African countries, Ghana has not celebrated me with any award,” she said.
Despite these challenges, Mzbel remains active in the music scene and is currently working on a new song addressing the theme of betrayal by friends.
Known for her bold persona and hit songs such as ’16 Years,’ ‘Awoso Me,’ ‘Yopoo,’ and ‘Edey Be,’ Mzbel remains a significant figure in Ghana’s music landscape.
