President John Dramani Mahama has referred three petitions demanding the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to the Council of State for consultation, following the provisions of Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
A statement from the Presidency’s Communications Directorate, issued on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, confirmed that the petitions were submitted by multiple individuals who have called on the President to take action against the Chief Justice.
In adherence to constitutional procedures, President Mahama has sought the Council of State’s advice before deciding on the appropriate steps to take.
While the specific allegations outlined in the petitions remain undisclosed, the situation marks a critical constitutional process that could lead to further investigations or even impeachment proceedings.
The Council of State will now deliberate on the petitions and provide its recommendations to the President, ensuring the matter proceeds according to Ghana’s legal and constitutional principles.
