Ghanaian actress and film producer Yvonne Nelson has shed light on the intense challenges she encountered within the Ghanaian movie industry, pointing fingers at the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) for trying to derail her career.
Speaking on The Career Trail on JoyNews and Joy Learning TV, Yvonne revealed that her candid and vocal stance on issues affecting the industry led to her being blacklisted by FIPAG.
“I was banned by a group of men in the industry. They call themselves FIPAG,” she said. “When you’re a woman and you speak out, especially when you’re unhappy about certain things, they don’t like it. They ask, ‘Why are you talking too much?’ But I felt I needed to speak on the things that didn’t sit right with me.”
Yvonne described the ban as an intentional attempt to silence and discourage her as a young woman from finding her place in the industry. “They wanted to intimidate me, end my dreams, and teach me a lesson,” she added.
In the face of adversity, Yvonne chose resilience over retreat. She launched her own production company, YN Productions, with financial support from Kelvin Kobiri, now in ministry, and producer Abdul Salam. “I decided to produce my own movies. I believed I could do it,” she explained.
However, her journey wasn’t without further setbacks. She recounted a major blow when armed robbers broke into her editor’s studio and stole all the footage from her debut production. “I believe it was sabotage. It was too much of a coincidence,” she said. “They banned me, and when I tried to come back, they tried to block that too.”
Despite the heavy loss, Yvonne and her team reshot the entire project, incurring significant costs. But her determination paid off. Today, she has successfully produced 14 films, including Kotoka and Heels and Sneakers, with her latest project, Summer, set to premiere soon.
