Dr. Kwesi Djokoto recently joined Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe in a crucial meeting with UNICEF officials led by Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali, the UNICEF Representative to Ghana. The primary focus of the discussions was on enhancing healthcare systems and improving access to essential services for vulnerable populations.
During the meeting, Mr. Khogali reaffirmed UNICEF’s ongoing commitment to supporting the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). He stressed the importance of restoring adequate resources to the healthcare system, aligning with the government’s dedication to uncapping the National Health Insurance Levy. This initiative aims to ensure that more resources are available to address the healthcare needs of all Ghanaians.
A key point of discussion was the NHIA-NIA registration process for children aged 6-14, which had faced setbacks but is now expected to resume shortly.
This process will allow children to access the benefits of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), significantly improving healthcare for younger populations. In addition, the NHIA is rolling out an automated renewal process for vulnerable populations, which will be supported by data from the Ghana National Household Register.
Dr. Bampoe emphasized the importance of streamlining processes and eliminating inefficiencies, recognizing UNICEF’s essential role in supporting these efforts. He commended UNICEF for their continued partnership and proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by the NHIA.
Mr. Khogali proposed further improvements, including simplifying vaccine payment mechanisms, institutionalizing free primary healthcare under the NHIS, and integrating preventive health services into the NHIS benefits package.
These suggestions aim to make healthcare more accessible and sustainable, particularly for marginalized communities.
