Education Minister Engages CHASS on Strengthening School Systems and Reforms

In a landmark meeting held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, met for the first time with members of the Conference of Heads of Government-Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) at the Sunyani Technical University.

During the engagement, the Minister highlighted the urgent need to intensify school inspections to prevent students from bringing prohibited items, such as dangerous weapons and drugs, onto campuses.

He also addressed key challenges in the education sector, including a shortage of non-teaching staff, complications with the double-track system, and lingering financial obligations inherited from past administrations. In response, he proposed targeted solutions to enhance education delivery.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to treating education-related concerns as national emergencies. He called for unified efforts from all stakeholders to collectively improve the standard and efficiency of education in Ghana.

At the event, the Minister officially introduced Professor Ernest Kofi Davis as the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), along with his deputies, Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi and Dr. Manawaru Issahaque.

CHASS members raised concerns about the limited resources available to schools, undue external pressures, and the imposition of what they described as unfair sanctions. In response, the GES leadership acknowledged these grievances and pledged to ensure a transparent and fair process for addressing them.

The meeting served as a platform for building stronger partnerships and devising long-term strategies to resolve the pressing issues facing senior high schools across the country.
