Tomeka Thiam, widely known as “Amirror” and the longtime wife of global music star Akon, has filed for divorce after nearly three decades of marriage.
Court documents submitted in Los Angeles County on September 12, 2025, just four days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary, cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Thiam is seeking joint legal custody of their 17-year-old child, primary physical custody, and spousal support for herself while requesting that Akon be denied support.
News of the divorce has quickly gone viral, with outlets such as TMZ, Billboard, and People covering the story, sparking heated discussions across social media. Many users expressed surprise given the couple’s long history together.
Akon, born Aliaune Thiam, has not yet commented on the situation. The singer has previously spoken about his practice of polygamy, claiming to have multiple wives and nine children, although Tomeka is his only legal spouse.
The filing comes as a shock, especially since in 2024 the couple publicly described their marriage as “super simple” and appeared united. Akon even supported Thiam’s music career and album promotion during the BET Awards.
