Police Launch Investigation into Death of 8-Year-Old Girl in Dzodze

The Ketu North District Police Command has begun investigations into the tragic death of eight-year-old Ivy Gbemu, allegedly linked to an assault by her father, Thomas Gbemu, at Dzodze-Fiagbedu in the Volta Region.

According to police reports, an informant alerted Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Habada, the District Crime Officer, on September 28, 2025, about the suspected assault. The child, a Class Two pupil at Dzodze Demonstration School, was allegedly beaten on September 26 and died the following day.

When police visited the suspect’s residence, he was nowhere to be found. A family source told the Ghana News Agency that the child had earlier complained of illness after school on September 25, prompting her father to purchase medication from a chemical shop.

During a search of the room where she reportedly died, officers retrieved medicines, including Efpac Junior Oral Suspension, Antipa Ladique Tablets, and Wonderful No. 1 Ointment, which were kept as evidence.

Dr. Samuel Owusu of St. Anthony’s Hospital, who examined the body, confirmed assault marks on both arms. The body has been preserved at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
