President Mahama Honoured with Prestigious Yoruba Chieftaincy Title in Nigeria

President John Dramani Mahama has been conferred with a highly respected Yoruba chieftaincy title in recognition of his leadership and commitment to global cooperation.

The honour was bestowed on him by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, during a colourful ceremony held in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, on Monday, December 15, 2025.

President Mahama was installed as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source, a title that celebrates his advocacy for equity, multilateralism and sustainable development on the global stage. Translated as “a president who reorganises the global space for humanity,” the title reflects his vision for a fairer and more inclusive international order.

The conferment underscores the deep cultural, historical and diplomatic bonds between Ghana and Nigeria, two nations with longstanding ties and shared values. Traditional leaders present at the ceremony described the honour as a symbol of unity and mutual respect between the two countries.

This is not President Mahama’s first chieftaincy recognition in Nigeria. In 2015, he received the title Aare Atolase of Offa from the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State, in acknowledgement of his contributions to leadership and diplomacy across the sub-region.
