Lands Minister Calls for Bold Reforms in Minerals Commission to Combat Illegal Mining

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has called for sweeping reforms within the Minerals Commission, emphasizing the urgent need to confront the longstanding issue of illegal mining in Ghana.

In his maiden official engagement with the Minerals Commission on Monday, April 7, 2025, the Minister underscored the critical role the Commission plays in regulating the mining industry. He urged the body to ensure the sector operates with greater responsibility, transparency, and strict adherence to sustainable practices.

Armah-Kofi Buah commended the staff for their years of service but stressed that the fight against illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” requires a bold shift in operations and mindset. “We need to reset the Minerals Commission—not just to improve its image but to reinforce its capacity to regulate effectively and eliminate illegal mining,” he said.

The Minister called for a complete overhaul of mining policies and a rigorous review of the licensing system. He emphasized the importance of patriotism, discipline, and accountability among staff, urging them to carry out their duties with integrity and selflessness.

Promising an open-door leadership style, Armah-Kofi Buah assured staff of his commitment to their professional growth and well-being. “When Ghanaians think of the Minerals Commission, they should think of a principled, professional institution committed to the nation’s best interest,” he added.

He also highlighted the need for teamwork, stating that transforming the licensing regime and enforcing regulations would only be successful through the collective efforts of all Commission members.

Following his address, the Minister interacted with staff, listened to their concerns, and reaffirmed his dedication to fostering a supportive work environment.

He later toured the Commission’s Control Room, which monitors excavators and other essential mining equipment, reinforcing his commitment to technological oversight in the fight against illegal mining.
