In a decisive operation spearheaded by National Security officials, six Indian nationals have been arrested for their involvement in illegal gold trading activities in Ghana.
The arrests took place across two regions, with three suspects apprehended at Enyinam in the Eastern Region and another three at Adiembra in the Ashanti Region.
The recent operation, conducted a few days ago, led to the seizure of significant evidence including large sums of cedis, hundreds of gold bars, and several money counting machines. The operation was led by National Security Coordinator, DCOP Abdul Osman, underscoring the government’s firm resolve to combat unlawful activities within the country’s lucrative gold trade sector.
Speaking at a media briefing on May 14, 2025, at the National Security Secretariat in Accra, Prince Minkah, Media Relations Officer for the Ghana GoldBod, confirmed that the suspects would face legal action. He explained that while a previous group of foreign nationals arrested before the April 30 deadline would be deported without prosecution, this latest batch would be prosecuted in court. “For the second batch, they will go to court and face the law.
This is a warning to every foreigner in Ghana: local gold trading is the sole preserve of the GoldBod,” Minkah asserted.
DCOP Abdul Osman also revealed that certain Ghanaians had been complicit in the scheme, allowing the foreigners to use their identities to register companies and avoid paying taxes. “These foreigners used the identities of Ghanaians to register their companies in order to evade taxes and conceal their involvement,” Osman disclosed.
In response to these developments, the Ghana GoldBod reiterated that any foreigner or individual seeking to engage in gold trading must obtain approval through official channels.
All applications to purchase or off-take gold are to be processed directly through the GoldBod, as part of ongoing efforts to regulate the industry and curb illegal practices.
This operation marks a significant step in the government’s broader campaign to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and enforce strict compliance with the country’s mining laws.
The Ghana GoldBod’s stern warning to foreigners serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting local regulations and Ghana’s sovereignty.
As legal proceedings commence, both National Security officials and the Ghana GoldBod have pledged to continue enforcing the law and protecting the nation’s economic interests. The successful arrests and confis
cation of evidence reflect the authorities’ determination to root out illegal gold trading and hold those involved accountable.
