Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC and the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has launched a hunger strike while in police custody, his lawyer has revealed.
Enoch Afoakwa, representing Abronye, said the political figure initiated the strike following his remand by an Accra Circuit Court on Friday.
According to Afoakwa, the hunger strike is both a protest against what Abronye describes as political persecution and a precautionary measure for his personal safety.
“Abronye is a man full of life. He understands that this is mere political persecution, and he remains hopeful that his freedom will be restored,” Afoakwa said.
The lawyer elaborated on the rationale behind the strike, emphasizing the risks his client faces while in custody.
When you are being treated as if you have committed a treasonable offence, can you trust those handing you water or food?
Under these circumstances, he must protect his life, which is why he has chosen to refuse food,” he explained.
Abronye was initially arrested on Monday, September 8, 2025, and charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.
The court has ordered that he remain in custody for a week to allow police to complete their investigations. He is scheduled to appear in court again on September 19, 2025.
