20 Students Arrested After Violent Clash at Salaga SHS

A violent clash between two student groups at Salaga Senior High School (SHS) in the Savannah Region has led to the arrest of 20 students. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, February 4, resulted in one person sustaining serious injuries.

According to reports, the altercation initially started on February 1, 2025, during an entertainment event when a disagreement broke out between two day students. The dispute quickly escalated after being reported to their respective groups in the Kpembe and Salaga townships, leading to heightened tensions on campus.

The situation worsened on February 4, when the groups engaged in a violent confrontation, prompting security personnel to intervene. During the arrests, police retrieved a locally manufactured gun, raising concerns about the safety of students and the security measures in place at the school.

Following the arrests, 17 of the students have been granted bail, with a condition to report periodically to the police. However, three students remain in police custody as authorities prepare to process them for court proceedings.

In response to the incident, school authorities and regional officials have established a seven-member committee to investigate the root causes of the clash. The committee is expected to provide a detailed report, including recommendations on how to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The violent clash has sparked discussions about student discipline, peer conflicts, and external influences affecting school environments. Some residents have called for stricter security measures, including improved monitoring of student activities and community engagement to curb external involvement in school disputes.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring justice is served and preventing future violence in educational institutions. They have urged students to resolve conflicts peacefully and warned against engaging in activities that could lead to legal consequences.

As investigations continue, school authorities and local leaders are working to restore calm on campus and reassure parents and guardians about the safety of their children. The outcome of the investigation is expected to provide insights into the factors that contributed to the violence and propose solutions to maintain peace and discipline at Salaga SHS.
