Actor Oscar Provencal Doubts End to Galamsey

Veteran actor Oscar Provencal has expressed skepticism about the end of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana. According to him, the issue is deeply rooted and will not disappear anytime soon.

Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show, Provençal stressed the need for a firmer approach, urging authorities to ensure more arrests and prosecutions of those involved in the menace.

“Illegal mining is a major issue in most countries as well, so we have to be principled at all stances, no matter the government in power,” he stated.

He also questioned the effectiveness of current measures to combat galamsey, asking whether law enforcement was targeting the right people. He pointed out that while many young people engage in illegal mining due to a lack of employment opportunities, the situation would be inexcusable if the government provided them with jobs.

His comments come at a time when the government continues to struggle with curbing galamsey, which has led to severe environmental and health consequences across the country. Many rivers and farmlands have been destroyed, sparking ongoing debates about the best way forward.

As Ghana seeks sustainable solutions, Provençal’s remarks highlight the need for not only stricter law enforcement but also economic alternatives for the youth to prevent them from turning to illegal mining.
