Finance Minister Meets Chinese Ambassador to Strengthen Economic Cooperation

Ghana’s Minister for Finance, Dr. Ato Forson, met with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, to discuss ongoing and future collaboration between the two nations.

Reflecting on past successes, Dr. Forson highlighted China’s role in the construction of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant during his tenure as Deputy Minister. He emphasized the need for a second gas processing plant to enhance Ghana’s energy infrastructure.

The discussion also covered key infrastructure projects, including the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, which was announced by the President. These projects are being considered ahead of the Mid-Year Budget Review, with Ghana seeking support from international partners like China.

Dr. Forson cited a well-known Chinese proverb, stating, “If you want to get rich, build roads first,” as he acknowledged the significant progress made on Chinese-funded projects in Ghana. He expressed hope that new initiatives would soon commence.

Additionally, he appealed for China’s support in finalizing Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.

In response, Ambassador Tong Defa welcomed the engagement and reaffirmed China’s commitment to assisting Ghana. He confirmed that the bilateral agreement and development partnership between the two nations are ready to be signed.
